Common Outlook Problems and Solutions
Outlook is a widely used email client, but it's not without its issues. Here are some common problems users encounter and their solutions:
Unable to Send or Receive Emails
- Check your internet connection and ensure that Outlook is not in offline mode.
- Sign in and out
- Click on 'File'
- Click on 'Office Account'
- Click on 'Sign Out'
- Clear the Outlook cache and restart the application.
- Click on 'File'
- Click on 'Options'
- Click on 'Mail'
- Under the 'Send messages' section, click on 'Empty Auto-Complete List'
Outlook Crashes or Freezes Frequently
- Close Outlook: Ensure that Outlook is completely closed before proceeding.
- Open the Run Dialog: Press Windows + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
- Enter the Safe Mode Command: Type Outlook.exe /safe and press Enter. This command will start Outlook in safe mode.
- Select Profile: If prompted, select the Outlook profile you want to use and click OK.
Missing or Corrupted Emails
- Check the Junk Email folder and recover any missing emails from there.
To prevent emails from going to the Junk folder in Outlook, you can follow these steps:
- Mark Emails as Not Junk: Open your Junk Email folder.
- Select the emails you want to keep and click on Not Junk from the top toolbar. This will move the emails to your Inbox and help Outlook learn that these emails are not junk.
- Use the "Recover Deleted Items" feature to retrieve any accidentally deleted emails.
Slow Performance and High Resource Usage
- Disable unnecessary add-ins and background processes to improve performance.
- Compact your Outlook data file to reduce its size and improve efficiency.
- Consider archiving old emails to reduce the load on your Outlook application.
Error Messages
- You will need to give your laptop a reboot
Zoomed in text
- If text is too zoomed in or out, you can change the size by holding 'control' on the keyboard and scrolling.
Outlook shuts down when minimized
Outlook has a feature that minimizes it to the system tray instead of the taskbar.
To check:
- Right-click the Outlook icon in the system tray (near the clock).

- Ensure that "Hide When Minimized" is unchecked.

If it’s checked, Outlook minimizes to the system tray and may seem like it has shut down.
How to change Outlook your 'View'
- Open the Outlook folder you want to change the view of, such as Inbox or Calendar.
- Press the View tab on the ribbon.
- Next, press the Change View button in the Current View group.
- Select one of the available views from the drop-down menu. For example, you can choose Compact, Single, or Preview for email folders, or Day/Week/Month for calendar folders.

How to Customize Your Outlook View
If none of the built-in views suit your needs, you can customize your view by changing various settings and options. You can modify an existing view or create a new one from scratch.
To customize your Outlook view, follow these steps:
- Open the Outlook folder that you want to customize.
- Select the View tab on the ribbon.
- Press the View Settings button in the Current View group.
