Mobile Device Preparation Before Overseas Travel
Overview
The ISM-1555 control outlines essential cybersecurity practices for personnel traveling overseas with mobile devices. These measures are designed to reduce the risk of data breaches, unauthorized access, and device compromise while operating in foreign environments.
Purpose
This article outlines the mandatory steps that all personnel must complete before travelling overseas with mobile devices, in compliance with ISM-1555 Control. These measures ensure sensitive data and systems remain protected during international travel.
Scope
This applies to:
- Company-issued mobile phones
- Staff travelling for work purposes outside of Australia
Pre-Travel Requirements
Before departing overseas, all staff must complete the following actions for each mobile device being taken:
1. Cofirm Device Details
To provide the following details to the Help Desk to maintain a comprehensive inventory of all mobile devices being taken. This record should include:
1.1 Product type (e.g., iPhone, iPad)
1.2 Serial number
1.3 International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number
2. Update Operating Systems and Applications
Ensure all devices have the latest:
2.1 Operating system updates
2.2 Security patches
2.3 Application updates
3. Remove Non-Essential Data and Apps
Minimise potential exposure by:
3.1 Deleting unnecessary documents, photos, downloads, and cached files
3.2 Removing unused or non-business-related apps
3.3 Logging out or removing any personal accounts
4. Backup Essential Data and Settings
Prior to departure:
4.1 Back up all work-related files to OneDrive
4.2 Ensure mobile contacts, settings, and applications are synced to a secure cloud service
4.3 Confirm that backups are restorable if the device is lost or wiped
